Before creating our own art pieces our class set out to find inspiration in one of San Diego's most important historical Chican@ sites. Located in Barrio Logan, Chicano Park has sat under the Coronado bridge since 1970. After government plans of a highway patrol station being built in the community the people of Barrio Logan demanded that a park be built instead. After protests, standoffs, and organization the land was given to the people who it rightfully belonged to.
During our trip to the park we talked to one of Chicano's muralist Irma Patricia. She explained to us the history behind the park and it's most popular murals and community figures.
